Recap: Helio Castroneves and the No. 3 REV Group Chevrolet team defended their crown and scored their second straight Verizon P1 Pole Award at Phoenix International Raceway in Friday evening’s qualifying session for the Desert Diamond West Valley Grand Prix of Phoenix. His single-lap time of 18.8701 seconds eclipsed his own track record of 19.0997 seconds established last season. It marked his 49th series career pole which places him in a tie for third all-time with Bobby Unser. It’s also the second pole win of the season having also claimed the honor at Long Beach earlier in April. Team Penske has garnered the pole at each of the four INDYCAR events, to date, this season, and 15 of the last 20 dating back to last season. Will Power will start alongside Castroneves on the front row in Saturday evening’s race behind the wheel of his No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet. Josef Newgarden, fresh off a win last week at Barber Motorsports Park, will line up his No. 2 Hum by Verizon Chevy in the fourth position while Simon Pagenaud will roll off the grid in the fifth spot with the No. 1 Menards Chevy. The pole win is the 249th in INDYCAR for Team Penske and the 517th for the organization overall.
