Driving the No. 12 Coca-Cola AMC Matador, Bobby Allison wins the Los Angeles Times 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway in Southern California. Allison leads 34 laps of the 200-lap race as he takes the checkered flag 48 seconds ahead of race runner-up David Pearson. Cale Yarborough finishes third on the day as the podium finishers were the only drivers to complete the final race of the NASCAR Cup Series season on the lead lap.

Scott McLaughlin wins the opening race of the Australian Supercars doubleheader championship weekend at Newcastle in dramatic fashion for DJR Team Penske.
Entering the final weekend of Supercars season, McLaughlin is in a tight battle with Shane Van Gisbergen for the title. After qualifying third in the No. 17 Shell V-Power Ford, McLaughlin quickly captures the race lead from Jamie Whincup early on. McLaughlin reclaims the top spot on lap 52 of the 95-lap race on the Newcastle street circuit before running out of fuel while leading on the final lap. Van Gisbergen slips past to seemingly claim the win, but a 25-second penalty is assessed to Van Gisbergen post race for a pit stop infraction, which drops him to fifth place in the final rundown. The penalty gives McLaughlin the victory as he extends his championship lead to 53 points over Van Gisbergen going into the final race of the season the following day. McLaughlin then finishes second in the finale – two spots ahead of Van Ginsbergen – to claim the series championship.
