Hornish Jr. to Start 20th in Coca-Cola 600

May 22, 2008

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 22, 2008) – Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the Penske Racing No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, qualified in 20th place for the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

After an impressive showing in the Sprint Showdown and All-Star Race last weekend at the 1.5-mile quad-oval, Hornish and the Mobil 1 team were 14th quickest in practice on Thursday.  In practice, Hornish posted a fast lap time of 29.953 seconds at a speed of 180.282 miles per hour, the fastest of those competitors required to qualify on time.

During his qualifying attempt, Hornish posted a fast lap time of 29.452 seconds at a speed of 183.349 miles per hour.  As in practice earlier, he was the fastest of those competitors required to qualify on time. The effort secured the No. 77 Mobil 1 team the 20th starting position for the season’s longest race.

“That was a pretty good run for the Mobil 1 Dodge,” said Hornish. “The track did not tighten up as much as we thought it would. We realized that was the case during practice for the Nationwide Series. I’m proud of this team and I think we have a good car for the race on Sunday.”

Coverage of the Coca-Cola 600 will air live on the FOX Network at 5 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live on PRN at 5:30 p.m. EDT.
