Weather Cancels Qualifying, Newman Starts 16th

September 5, 2008

RICHMOND, Va.  (Sept. 5, 2008) - Ryan Newman, driver of the Penske Racing No.12 Alltel Dodge Charger, will start 16th in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway on Sunday afternoon.

NASCAR postponed the race, which was originally scheduled for Saturday night, until Sunday at 1 p.m. ET due to the projected path of Tropical Storm Hanna. Heavy winds and rain have been predicted for the Richmond area on Friday night and all day Saturday.

Weather associated with the approaching tropical storm also forced the cancellation of qualifying on Friday evening. Per the NASCAR Rule Book, the field was set by the 2008 owner points, meaning Newman and the No. 12 Alltel Dodge will roll off 16th on Sunday.

"Richmond has always been my favorite short track on the circuit, and we have a good track record here, so we are looking forward to the getting the Alltel Dodge on track on Sunday," Newman said. "With the postponement of the race and the rain over the next two days, there will be a lot of unknowns for the start of the race on Sunday."

Newman has one win, four top-five and eight top-10 finishes in 13 starts at Richmond International Raceway. Newman finished sixth at Richmond in the spring. He is currently 16th in the NASCAR Cup Series driver point standings.

Coverage of the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 begins on the ESPN television network on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. EDT. The race can also be heard on the MRN beginning at 1:15 p.m. EDT.
