Notes & Quotes
For Immediate Release - September 16, 2008

  • Ryan Newman, driver of the Penske Racing No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, has three wins, four pole positions, six top-five and eight top-10 finishes in 13 NASCAR Cup Series starts at Dover International Speedway.

  • In June, Newman ran in the top 10 for most of the day and led six laps. The No. 12 team managed a 14th-place finish despite an equipment issue late in the race, which made it difficult to fuel the car.

  • Newman has started outside of the top five only three times in 13 races at the "Monster Mile." In addition to four poles, Newman has started on the outside pole twice. His average starting position at the one-mile concrete oval is 7.5.

  • In 2003, Newman swept both NASCAR Cup Series races at Dover.

  •  Newman's most recent win at Dover came in the fall of 2004. In that race, he started second, but moved into the front spot early and led 325 of 400 laps. Newman built a commanding eight-second lead over the final 130 laps to claim the first ever "Monster Trophy."

  • Newman's has finished outside of the top-15 at Dover only three times in 13 starts. His average finishing position at the "Monster Mile" is 10.3.

  • Newman has two NASCAR Nationwide Starts at Dover, and scored the pole both times (2001, 2005). In 2005, Newman and current Cup Series crew chief Roy McCauley had a dominant race car as they started on the pole, led 193 of 200 laps and won the race.

  • Crew chief Roy McCauley considers Dover International Speedway his home track. McCauley hails from nearby Davidsonville, Md., which is about an hour away from the track. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in engineering.

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES ON:
RACING AT DOVER: "Dover is one of my favorite race tracks, and it has been a good track for the Alltel Dodge team. It's a physically demanding track, so by the end of the day you have had quite a work out. But more importantly, it is a really fun track to drive. It's really unique how you drop off into the corners and then climb up the hills onto the straighaways. At Dover, the entry into the corners is the toughest part. If you don't get a good entry, you're not going to have a good middle or a good exit. The fact that it's concrete doesn't hurt anything either because it makes the track more consistent, which is good for all teams. The track doesn't change a whole lot, so if you get the setup right then chances are you are going to perform well all day and have a chance to win the race there at the end."

WINNING THE MONSTER TROPHY: "It's a pretty cool trophy, and it was an honor to win the first one. I would like to get another one. I have a funny story about the trophy. When we got it, I put it out in the shop. Our dog, Mopar, went out to the shop with me and he started barking at it. So it's a pretty scary trophy."

COMPETING IN DOVER'S CHARITY BILLIARDS TOURNAMENT: "I wouldn't say that I am really good at pool, but I may have something up my sleeve when it comes to the tournament this weekend. I'm looking forward to cutting up and having a good time with Kasey (Kahne) and Carl (Edwards) and the other guys who are playing. As in anything, you don't necessarily have to be the best there-it just depends on how the balls fall. It's a good chance for me to get a nice donation for the Ryan Newman Foundation, so I think it will be fun."

ROY
MCCAULEY QUOTES ON:
RACING AT DOVER: "I consider Dover my home track, so I am always excited to go there. We have had a lot of success there as a company. Ryan has four wins there in Cup and one win in Nationwide, and I can't even count the number of poles. We had a good run going there in June, and ran in the top 10 for most of the day before we had a problem at the end. I think we have the opportunity to have another strong run for the Alltel Dodge at Dover this weekend."
