Hornish to Start 33rd at Richmond International Raceway

September 11, 2009

RICHMOND, Va. (September 11, 2009) - Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the Penske Racing No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, will line up in the 33rd starting position for the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night.

Hornish has a successful record at Richmond having competed in three different racing series at the .75-mile oval. In IndyCar Series competition, Hornish produced two victories with four top-five results and one pole position in a total of seven starts. In May, Hornish earned a sixth-place finish in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond.

The 25th competitor to make a qualifying attempt, Hornish posted a fast-lap time of 21.736 seconds at a speed of 124.248 miles per hour. The effort secured the 33rd starting position for the No. 77 team.

“The Mobil 1 Dodge was pushing a bit out there today during qualifying,” said Hornish. “We will have to work hard tomorrow night to advance in the running order because track position is very important here. This No. 77 team has come from the back of the field and captured top-10 finishes this season so we know we can do it again. I’m looking forward to an exciting race tomorrow night.”

Coverage of the Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway will air live on the ABC television network on Saturday, September 12 beginning at 7 p.m. EDT and will also be broadcast live on MRN Radio at 6:45 p.m. EDT.
