THE RACE REVIEW
·Joey Logano qualified 31st for Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
·Starting so far back in the field, the team knew that it had little time to waste in trying to get to the front. Over the course of the first 100 laps, Logano was able to race his way into the top 15, all the while dealing with an extremely loose-handling race car.
·As the track conditions began to change when the sun set and night came over the 1.5-mile speedway, Logano and race strategist Greg Erwin made several changes over the course of a total of 11 pit stops during the 600-mile event.
·Logano worked his way into the top 10 for the first time on lap 245 and continued his strong march to the front of the field.
·Fast pit stops by the No. 22 Pennzoil Ford team, along with great restarts by Logano, allowed him to move into the top five on lap 325.
·Logano ran as high as second as the race entered its final stages.
·With just 13 laps to go, Logano pitted for four fresh tires and restarted the race in eighth place. The No. 22 Pennzoil Ford was able to race up to fifth at the finish, which gave Logano his fourth top-five finish of the year.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING
TALK ABOUT COMING FROM SO FAR BACK IN THE RACE.
“It was a long race. Starting from 31st with the Shell-Pennzoil Ford we had our work cut out for us, especially at a track that is so hard to pass. It seemed like it was harder to pass here than normal, but my pit crew did a tremendous job today. They gained me at least one spot every time I came down pit road and that’s so valuable. Pit calls were definitely interesting there at the end on what we needed to do and whether we took four or two (tires) when they were going green, and then when the caution (flag) came out whether we were gonna do four or two (tires) again. I’m glad I’m not the one making the calls.”
HOW DO YOU FEEL THE CREW DID THE LAST THREE WEEKS?
“With these penalties with Greg (Erwin), Steve (Reis) and all the guys filling in these spots have done an awesome job. We couldn’t find better people to do that and I’m just very proud of my team. They’re a bunch of hard fighters and I’m so happy to be involved with that.”
