Team Notes: Saturday's activities for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg started with Scott McLaughlin piloting his No. 3 DEX Imaging Chevrolet to the first lap under one minute – 59.7342 seconds – in the history of the circuit during the morning practice session. Unfortunately, this did not count as the official track record since it did not come in qualifying. No matter for the Australian driving ace as he bested that lap by over two tenths of a second in capturing the first NTT P1 Award of his young open wheel career, after scoring 59 pole positions during his time as a champion driver in the Australian Supercars Series. Teammate Will Power placed his No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevrolet on the outside of the front row, narrowly missing out on his 64th career pole position that would have inched him closer to the all-time record. Two-time INDYCAR SERIES champion Josef Newgarden will roll his No. 2 Hitachi Chevrolet off from the ninth position.
