Team Notes: Qualifying for the Indy Toronto race on the Exhibition Place circuit is among the most-important of the year, with the notoriously tight, 1.786-mile layout a challenging one on which to pass. The Saturday activity schedule got off to a less-than-desirable start for Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 Hitachi Chevy team as an oil pressure issue resulted in them getting no laps at full speed in practice and necessitating an engine change before qualifying. There was no penalty assessed for the engine swap. For the No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevy team of Will Power and the No. 3 XPEL Chevy team of Scott McLaughlin, the practice session was a solid warmup to qualifying as they slotted in third and fourth, respectively, on the scoring pylon. Unfortunately for Power and team, their rash of bad luck in qualifying continued in Toronto as an extended red flag kept them from transferring to the top 12 for yet another race. Power will start 16th on Sunday, the same starting position he drove from to win in Detroit last month. For a driver making their first start in Toronto, McLaughlin showed he is a quick study by making it to the Firestone Fast Six. The New Zealander will start sixth for the 85-lap race. Despite making no competitive laps in the morning practice session, Newgarden looked to be in position to pick up another NTT P1 Award this weekend before being bumped from the top spot to the third position late in the Firestone Fast Six.
