WINNING POLE NOTES
- · Simon Pagenaud earned his seventh Verizon P1 Pole Award of the season and first on the 2.385-mile Sonoma Raceway on Saturday afternoon.
- · Pagenaud won poles earlier this season at Barber Motorsports Park, the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, both ends of the Raceway at Belle Isle doubleheader, Iowa Speedway and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
- · Padenaud's lap of 1:16.2530 set a track record that was previously held by teammate Will Power.
- · It was the eighth pole of his Team Penske career.
- · It was the ninth pole of his Verizon IndyCar Series career.
- · It was his first career pole win at Sonoma Raceway.
- · Team Penske swept the first four qualifying sports, with Helio Castroneves second, Juan Pablo Montoya third and Power fourth.
- · It's the second time this season Team Penske swept the first two rows in qualifying (St. Pete).
- · Team Penske ended up winning 11 of 16 pole awards in 2016.
- · It is the 505th overall pole win for Team Penske in its 50th year of competition.
- · This is the 245th Verizon IndyCar Series pole for Team Penske.
- · With the bonus point for qualifying on the pole, Pagenaud now has to finish fifth or better to clinch the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series Championship. Pagenaud leads teammate Power by 44 points going into tomorrow's finale.
