Recap: Helio Castroneves captured the Verizon P1 Pole Award in Saturday's Verizon IndyCar Series qualifying session for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach (Calif.). In doing so, he claimed his 48th series career pole award, which puts him fourth on the all-time list. In the Firestone Fast Six round, the Brazilian-born Castroneves navigated the 1.968-mile temporary street course in a track record 1 minute, 6.2254 seconds for an average speed of 106.980 mph behind the wheel of his No. 3 Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet for his first pole position of the season. It was his third consecutive pole win at the California street course and fourth in his career. Josef Newgarden will roll off eighth in Sunday's race in his No. 2 Hum by Verizon Chevy. Will Power and his No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet will start from the ninth position. Reigning series champion Simon Pagenaud had a track-record lap erased on an interference penalty from IndyCar officials and as a result will start last.
