Notes: Simon Pagenaud led the charge to the front for Team Penske’s three-car team in qualifying for Saturday night’s Verizon IndyCar Series Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Phoenix Grand Prix at ISM Raceway. Pagenaud won last year’s event at the Avondale, Ariz. track and has an average finish of 1.5 in two career starts at the one-mile oval. After being the 11th car to qualify, Pagenaud maintained the top spot for most of the session until Sebastien Bourdais took it over as he completed his final lap. Will Power was the second of the team’s Chevrolets to qualify and quickly jumped to second on the charts but ultimately settled into a third place starting spot. Defending series champion, Josef Newgarden was the final Team Penske Chevrolet to take to the track. After the field completed their qualifying laps, Newgarden found himself in the seventh position for tomorrow night’s race.
