Power and Pagenaud used early qualifying draws to their advantage as they finished the first day with the second and third-fastest laps, respectively. Power came agonizingly close to the top spot, finishing .002 mph behind Spencer Pigot. IndyCar Series points leader Josef Newgarden also finished the session with a top-five run, posting the fourth-fastest lap. Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves made two runs on the day and will start the race from the outside of the fourth row in the 12th position as only the first three and final rows will be set tomorrow.
