Notes:
It was a challenging day for Team Penske as the team's three Chevrolets had mixed performance between final practice and qualifying in preparation for Sunday's Grand Prix of Portland. Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 Hitachi Dallara/Chevrolet began the day with a strong run in final practice finishing the session in the second position. However, due to an on-track miscue during qualifying, Newgarden qualified in the 13th position. Will Power and the No. 12 Verizon Dallara/Chevrolet team found considerable speed running third in final practice. Their efforts led to an even stronger performance during qualifying, as they will start on the front row in the second position. Simon Pagenaud and the No. 22 Menards Dallara/Chevrolet team experimented with a number of changes in setup during final practice which led to a 17th-place finish in the session. Unfortunately, their efforts did not improve the speed of the car, which led them to qualify in the 18th position. Tonight, the teams will review their data collected over the weekend to prepare for final changes before tomorrow afternoon's race.
