THE RACE REVIEW

 

·  Hornish started Saturday’s season opener on the outside of the front row based on his lap of 50.885 seconds at 176.869 miles per hour during Friday afternoon’s qualifying session.

·  Hornish ran as high as second and as low as 35th over the course of the event.

·  At lap 28 Hornish helped push Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski to the front of the field.

·  Hornish ran at the back of the field during the middle part of the race trying to avoid any multi-car accidents

·  At lap 92 Hornish pushed his Ford-powered machine into the second position as he worked with the No. 2 car driven by Brian Scott.

·  Hornish ran inside the top-four for the majority of the last 25 laps of the 120-lap race.

·  A lap 116 red-flag set-up a green-white-checkered flag finish. A multi-car accident occurred at the checkered flag as Hornish came home in second place.

·  Hornish leads the NNS standings heading into next week’s race in Phoenix.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

 

WHAT DID YOU SEE AT THE FINISH OF THE RACE?

“The only thing I saw coming to the white flag was the 33 car (race winner Tony Stewart) and I got separated and got back together.  I pushed him up there as far as I could.  It took some dicey moves and I guess the 22 and 7 got tangled up there.  I tried to get off the back of the 33 so I didn’t push him into anything and as soon as I got clean air I was right in the back of the 22, so it’s unfortunate that we did get a little bit torn up, but I guess it was a second-place finish.  I’ll take that.  It’s a lot better than the 20th that we had last year.”  - Sam Hornish, Jr.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE RESULT?

“I’m real happy with the Alliance Truck Parts Ford Mustang.  I’m looking forward to this year.  I knew today was going be a crapshoot and I feel like we’re going be better when we get to some of the actual handling tracks. So we got through this and I’m looking forward to Phoenix. Our thoughts go out to the fans (injured at the end of the race) and we hope everyone is okay.” – Sam Hornish, Jr.
