Recap: The first day of practice for the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona saw heavy rain showers greet the teams when they showed up at the “World Center of Racing.” Though the precipitation stopped prior to the first session the track was still damp, so Team Penske utilized the time to installation laps where all systems are checked but resulted in no official lap times being recorded. In the second practice session Ricky Taylor clocked in with the fourth-fastest lap, which he more than backed up in qualifying where he will start second after a lap of 1:33.873 seconds. Taylor’s lap bested the former track record, but just missed the pole position. Juan Pablo Montoya slotted in with the ninth-fastest lap in the second session and made a jump to third in qualifying with a lap of 1:34.095 seconds.
